How do you navigate cultural expectations from both your Santhal community and the larger society?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Santhal community know that navigating cultural expectations can feel like walking a tightrope. On one hand, there are the rich traditions and values of our Santhal heritage that shape who we are, and on the other, there are the pressures from the larger society that often clash with those values. It can be overwhelming and isolating at times. One thing that really helped me was finding ways to embrace our culture while also acknowledging the realities of living in a broader society. For instance, I’ve started incorporating elements of my Santhal heritage into my daily life, whether it’s cooking traditional meals or listening to Santhal songs. These small acts not only help me stay connected to my roots but also give me the confidence to share my culture with others. I've found that when I express my identity proudly, it opens up conversations with those outside our community, helping them understand where I come from. Another approach that many of us find helpful is creating a support network within our community. I’ve connected with others who share similar experiences and feelings about balancing cultural expectations. We meet regularly to discuss our challenges, share stories, and support each other in navigating these pressures. Just having even one person who truly understands this struggle can make a world of difference. Together, we’ve brainstormed ways to respond to societal expectations while staying true to our Santhal identity. It's also important to recognize that it’s okay to feel conflicted. Many of us grapple with the desire to fit in with the wider society while wanting to honor our traditions. It’s a journey, and there’s no right or wrong way to navigate it. Sometimes, just talking to someone who gets it can bring a sense of relief and clarity. So, how do you navigate these cultural expectations? Anyone else feeling the weight of this balancing act? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you along the way.
