Navigating cultural expectations while trying to express my identity as Santhal

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations while trying to express our identity as Santhal can often feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that tug-of-war between honoring our rich cultural roots and the pressures to fit into a more mainstream narrative. It can be overwhelming at times, especially when our identities seem to clash with the expectations placed upon us by family or society. One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of fellow Santhal friends who share similar experiences. We meet up regularly to talk about our cultural identity and the challenges we face. Having that space where we can openly discuss feelings of alienation and joy has been a game-changer. It’s comforting to know that others understand the frustration when our traditional values seem at odds with modern life, or when we feel misunderstood by those who don’t share our background. Another approach that some of us try is incorporating elements of our Santhal culture into our everyday life in subtle ways. Whether it’s through music, art, or even our fashion choices, these small acts of self-expression can help ground us in our identity. I’ve started to wear traditional Santhal jewelry more often, and it’s amazing how it sparks conversations that let me share my culture with others. It’s like opening a door to deeper connections, where I can explain the significance behind my choices. We also face unique challenges during family gatherings or cultural events, where the expectations to conform can be intense. Many of us have found it helpful to prepare for these situations by talking through our feelings with our community beforehand. Just knowing that we’re not alone in feeling that pressure can ease some of the tension. And sometimes, sharing a laugh over those awkward moments helps us navigate them with a bit more grace. Anyone else dealing with this? It’s not always easy, but connecting with even one person who gets it can make all the difference. I’d love to hear how you’re navigating your identity as Santhal and what has helped you along the way.
