Navigating family expectations while trying to honor our Santhal culture can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have experienced that pressure to conform to certain traditions, especially when those traditions clash with our own values or lifestyles. It can be tough, and the weight of expectation often feels heavier during family gatherings or celebrations.
One thing that has helped me is finding a balance between honoring our traditions and staying true to myself. For instance, during festivals, I’ve started to incorporate elements that feel authentic to me — whether that means sharing my own interpretations of rituals or suggesting new ways to celebrate that respect our culture while allowing for personal expression. It’s not always easy, especially when family members have strong opinions about how things “should” be done, but taking these small steps has made a difference.
Another approach that has been helpful is building a support network with others who share our Santhal identity. Connecting with friends or family who understand this struggle has been invaluable. For example, I found someone who feels the same way about the expectations placed on us, and we’ve started meeting regularly to share our experiences. Just having that one person to talk to has made all the difference; we can brainstorm ways to navigate family gatherings together and support each other through the challenges.
Many of us might also feel that guilt when we don’t meet family expectations, which can be heavy. It’s important to remind ourselves that honoring our culture doesn’t mean sacrificing our individuality. It’s okay to carve out our own paths while still respecting our roots. Finding ways to communicate this to our families, perhaps by sharing stories about how our culture is evolving, can open their eyes to a broader understanding of what it means to be Santhal today.
Anyone else navigating this tricky balance? It’s such a unique experience, and sharing our stories might just help us feel less alone in this journey. What has worked for you in honoring our culture while managing family expectations?
