Navigating cultural expectations while trying to maintain my identity as a Santhal in a modern world

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know what it's like to feel pulled between our rich Santhal heritage and the pressures of modern society. The expectations that come from our families and communities can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when they clash with our personal aspirations or the way we want to express our identity. It’s a delicate balance to maintain our roots while navigating the demands of today’s world. One thing that’s helped me is finding ways to incorporate our cultural practices into my daily life. For instance, I try to celebrate our traditional festivals with my family, even if it means adapting some of the customs to fit a busy schedule. This not only keeps our culture alive but also creates beautiful moments with my loved ones. Sharing these experiences with others who also identify as Santhal can be incredibly grounding. I found a few friends who understand the nuances of our traditions, and we often meet to discuss how we can stay connected to our heritage while pursuing our individual paths. Another approach that many of us have found useful is creating a personal space where we can freely express our identity. This could be through art, music, or even writing. For me, reconnecting with Santhal songs or storytelling has been a way to express my feelings and experiences. It’s comforting to know that even in a fast-paced world, our stories and traditions hold value. Sharing these passions with others can lead to deeper conversations and connections that reaffirm our identities. Of course, there are days when the weight of cultural expectations feels heavy, and it can be difficult to navigate our place within both our community and the wider world. During those times, reaching out to someone else who understands this struggle has been invaluable. I recently connected with someone who shares my background, and we’ve been talking regularly. Just having that one person who truly gets where we’re coming from has made such a difference on the tougher days. Anyone else feeling this push and pull between tradition and modernity? What are some ways you’ve found to honor your Santhal identity while managing outside expectations? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s worked for you!
