Navigating family expectations while trying to honor my Santhal identity

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us from the Santhal community know the struggle of balancing our cultural identity with family expectations. It can feel like walking a tightrope, trying to honor our roots while navigating what our families want us to become. We might feel torn between the rich traditions of our Santhal heritage and the pressures to conform to mainstream norms or even what our families envision for our futures. One thing that has helped me is finding moments to share our Santhal stories with family. When I talk about my experiences and the beauty of our culture—like our dances, songs, or the significance of our festivals—I often see a spark of interest in their eyes. It creates a bridge, allowing us to connect more deeply. You might find that sharing your own journeys, even the challenges, can open the door for conversations that honor both your identity and their expectations. Another approach some of us try is setting boundaries while remaining respectful. It’s okay to express that while we appreciate their hopes for us, we also need to carve our own paths. It can be tough, especially when we worry about disappointing our families, but many of us have found that being honest about our needs helps pave the way for understanding. Sometimes it leads to unexpected support once they see how much our identity means to us. And let’s not forget the importance of connecting with others who understand this struggle. Having even one person to share our experiences with can lighten the load. I found a friend in our community who shares similar feelings about family expectations, and we meet up regularly to talk about our journeys. Just knowing we’re not alone in this can make a huge difference, and it’s comforting to realize that our experiences resonate with others. Anyone else feeling this pull between family expectations and honoring your Santhal identity? It can be a rocky road, but sharing our stories can really help us navigate it together. What’s been your experience?
