Navigating friendships when you feel like an outsider

Have you ever felt like you’re watching life happen from the sidelines, surrounded by friends who just don’t seem to get what you’re going through? Many of us know that feeling all too well. Navigating friendships when you feel like an outsider can be really tough, especially when it seems like everyone else is fitting in seamlessly.
One thing that’s helped me is finding common ground with my friends. Instead of feeling like I had to hide parts of myself, I started sharing my experiences related to feeling different. It can be awkward at first, but many times, I was surprised by how open my friends were to listening. Just opening up a little about how I feel can lead to deeper conversations and a newfound understanding.
Another approach some of us try is to intentionally seek out friendships with people who have similar experiences. I remember connecting with someone who also felt like an outsider in their own way. We started meeting for coffee regularly, and it made such a difference. Just having that one person who truly understands the struggle can lighten the load and remind you that you’re not alone.
We also know that it’s important to be honest about our boundaries. Sometimes, we might feel overwhelmed in social situations, and that’s okay! Communicating our needs to friends can help them understand when we need space or a different type of support. It’s a process, but it can lead to more authentic and fulfilling relationships.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — what has been your experience in finding your place in friendships?
