How do you navigate conversations about your identity with people who assume they know your story?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever felt frustrated when someone assumes they know your story just by looking at you? Many of us have been there—people making quick judgments or offering unsolicited advice based on their own perceptions. It can feel isolating, and sometimes even hurtful, when they don’t take the time to truly understand who we are and what we go through. One thing that has helped me in these situations is to practice gentle honesty. Instead of getting defensive when someone makes an assumption, I try to calmly share my experience. For instance, if someone says, “I know exactly how you feel,” I might respond with, “It’s great that you want to relate, but my experience is a bit different.” This opens the door to a more genuine conversation and lets them know that our journeys are uniquely ours. Another approach that some of us find useful is setting boundaries. It’s okay to express that you’re not comfortable discussing certain aspects of your identity. You might say something like, “I appreciate your concern, but I prefer to keep that part of my life private.” This can be tough, especially when we want to connect, but it’s essential for our well-being. Finding someone in our community who really gets it can make all the difference. I started talking regularly with a friend who faces similar challenges, and that has helped me feel less alone in navigating these conversations. Just having one person who understands what it’s like to deal with assumptions can provide a sense of relief and support. Anyone else feeling this struggle? I’d love to hear how you handle conversations with people who assume they know your story. Sometimes just sharing our experiences can help us find that connection we all need.
