Finding the right pronouns can be exhausting — how do you handle it when people get it wrong?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of having our pronouns misunderstood or misused, and it can be really exhausting. It's not just about a word; it’s about our identity being recognized and respected. The anxiety of correcting someone can feel overwhelming, especially in social situations where we want to feel safe and accepted. One thing that has helped me is to prepare for those moments when someone gets it wrong. I often remind myself that people are not always malicious; sometimes, they just need a gentle nudge. If I’m feeling up to it, I’ll calmly correct them, saying something like, “Actually, I use they/them pronouns.” I’ve found that being clear but kind can ease the tension and create a moment for genuine understanding. Another approach some of us find useful is to have a supportive friend nearby who knows our pronouns. If someone misgenders us, they can step in and help correct the mistake, which takes the pressure off us. It’s a small thing, but having even one person in your corner can make a world of difference during those awkward encounters. Also, let’s face it: sometimes we just need to vent. Finding a community, whether online or in person, where we can share these experiences can be really healing. Sharing stories about the times we’ve been misgendered, how we handled it, or even just commiserating about the exhaustion can ease the burden. Connecting with others who understand these challenges reminds us we’re not alone in this journey. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you handle it when people get it wrong? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can lighten the load.
