Navigating family gatherings when they refuse to use my correct pronouns

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be a minefield for many of us, especially when our loved ones refuse to use our correct pronouns. It can feel like a slap in the face when we’re just trying to be ourselves in spaces that should feel safe. Many of us know that heart-sinking feeling when a family member stumbles over our pronouns or, worse, ignores them altogether. It can make us question our place in the family and even our identity. One thing that has helped me navigate these situations is having a straightforward, yet calm conversation with my family beforehand. I usually try to share how important it is for me that they respect my pronouns. This can be challenging, especially if you anticipate pushback or misunderstanding. But I’ve found that framing it as a matter of respect can sometimes soften their resistance. And if you’re comfortable, reaching out to a relative who supports you can help — they can be an ally during those tense moments. Another approach some of us try is finding ways to lighten the mood when awkward moments happen. For example, if someone uses the wrong pronoun, I might gently correct them with humor, saying something like, “Close, but still not quite there! Let’s keep trying!” It’s a way to remind them without escalating the tension. We can also find small victories in these gatherings, like celebrating when someone does use our correct pronouns, no matter how minor it may seem. And let’s not forget the power of connection. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this struggle can change everything. I found that talking to another non-binary friend about our experiences helped me feel less alone. We even agreed to text each other during family gatherings for a little support boost. It’s comforting to know someone else is in the same boat, navigating the waves of frustration and hope together. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear your stories and what strategies you’ve found helpful. Sometimes just sharing with someone who gets it is a relief in itself!
