How do you navigate family expectations while staying true to your identity as a Koli?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations while staying true to our identity as Koli can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know the weight of tradition pressing down on us, alongside the desire to honor our roots while still carving out our own paths. It’s tough when the dreams and values passed down through generations sometimes clash with who we want to be today. One thing that helped me was opening up about my feelings in small, honest conversations with family members. I started with those who seemed more open-minded; sharing my experiences and aspirations allowed them to see me as I really am, rather than just the expectations they held. It didn’t solve everything overnight, but it laid the groundwork for more understanding. Another approach some of us have found useful is connecting with fellow Kolis who share similar challenges. I found a few friends in our community who are navigating the same family dynamics. We meet up regularly, whether in person or virtually, to share our stories and strategies. Just knowing that I'm not alone in this struggle makes it a little easier to stand my ground when family pressures arise. It’s also important to practice self-compassion. Many of us deal with guilt for wanting to diverge from family traditions, but it's okay to honor your own identity. Setting boundaries, while challenging, has been a crucial step in my journey. It’s about finding that balance where you can respect your heritage without losing yourself in the process. Anyone else feeling this push and pull with family expectations? Sometimes just talking with someone who gets it can make all the difference. Would love to hear your experiences and what’s worked for you!
