Many of us know the sting of discrimination in our daily lives, whether it’s a harsh look from a stranger, dismissive comments, or being overlooked in professional settings. It can feel like an invisible weight that we carry with us everywhere, and sometimes it’s hard to shake off the anger or sadness that comes with those experiences.
One thing that really helps me is finding a safe space to share these feelings. Talking to someone who understands the unique challenges we face as part of the Koli community can be incredibly validating. I found a group of folks nearby who also identify with our experiences, and we meet up regularly to discuss what we’re going through. Just knowing I’m not alone in this has made those difficult moments a little less heavy.
Another approach that some of us try is to focus on self-affirmation. When discrimination hits hard, I remind myself of my worth and the strength in our culture. It’s so easy to internalize the negativity, but we have to push back against it. Creating a personal mantra or even a list of things that make you proud of your identity can help shift the focus back to the positive.
Setting boundaries is also crucial. If certain environments or people consistently make us feel unwelcome or judged, it’s okay to step back. Protecting our mental health should always come first. I’ve had to distance myself from relationships that drain my energy or make me feel less than, and it’s been liberating to surround myself with those who uplift and celebrate our shared experiences.
I know it’s tough, and the isolation can be the hardest part. But connecting with even one person who lives it too can be a game-changer. Anyone else dealing with this? It would be great to hear your stories and what’s helped you cope.
