Navigating family expectations around marriage and career as a Koli

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us Kolis know that navigating family expectations around marriage and career can feel like walking a tightrope. On one side, there’s the pressure to settle down and uphold traditional values, and on the other, the desire to pursue our own dreams and ambitions. It's tough to balance our personal aspirations with the expectations that come from our families and community. One thing that has really helped me is finding ways to communicate openly with my family about my career goals. I remember when I expressed my interest in pursuing a non-traditional career path. At first, my family was hesitant, worried that I was straying too far from what they envisioned for me. But by sharing my passion and the potential impact my work could have, I was able to ease their concerns. It took time and patience, but having those honest conversations made a world of difference. Another approach that many of us Kolis have found helpful is connecting with others who understand our unique challenges. I started meeting with a small group of friends from our community who are also navigating similar family expectations. We share our experiences, support each other, and brainstorm strategies for managing our families' pressures. Just having that space to talk about our feelings and frustrations has been incredibly validating and uplifting. And let’s be real: there are days when the pressure feels overwhelming. There might be cultural events or family gatherings where the questions about our marital status or career choices come flooding in. On those days, I try to remind myself that it’s okay to feel frustrated or anxious. It helps to have a few go-to responses ready for those tricky questions. For example, I might say I’m focused on building my career right now, and that I'm excited about the opportunities ahead. Anyone else feeling the weight of these expectations right now? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — what have you found helpful in navigating these family discussions?
