How do you navigate cultural expectations while trying to stay true to your identity as Koli?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations while trying to stay true to our identity as Koli can be a real balancing act. Many of us feel the weight of tradition pressing down on us while also wanting to carve our own paths. It can sometimes leave us feeling torn between honoring our heritage and embracing who we truly are. One thing that has helped me is finding small ways to express my Koli identity in my daily life. For instance, I’ve started incorporating Koli recipes into my cooking, even if it’s just for myself. Preparing these meals not only connects me to my roots but also gives me a sense of pride in who I am. Sharing these dishes with friends or family has opened up conversations about our culture and its significance, which is a great way to build those connections. Another approach that some of us try is setting boundaries around cultural expectations. It’s okay to say no to certain traditions or events if they don’t resonate with us anymore. For example, I had a tough time with certain family celebrations that felt more obligatory than meaningful. By being honest with my loved ones about what aspects of our culture I cherish and which ones I struggle with, I found that many of them were surprisingly understanding. It’s all about fostering that dialogue and showing that we can honor our culture while also being true to ourselves. Having a community of fellow Kolis to lean on has been a game changer too. I found someone nearby who understands these challenges, and we’ve started talking regularly. Just knowing that I’m not alone in navigating these expectations makes the hard days a bit easier. Sometimes, having even one person who truly gets it can change everything. Anyone else grappling with this? I’d love to hear how you manage to stay true to your Koli identity while dealing with cultural pressures. What’s helped you along the way?
