Navigating the stigma attached to being Koli can feel like walking a tightrope sometimes, can’t it? Many of us carry the weight of stereotypes and misconceptions in our everyday lives, which can be exhausting. Whether it’s encountering judgmental glances or hearing dismissive comments, these experiences can chip away at our confidence and sense of belonging.
One thing that has helped me is finding a small group of fellow Kolis to connect with. We share our experiences, and it feels like a breath of fresh air to talk openly about the specific challenges we face. Just knowing there are others who understand the unique struggles, like dealing with cultural misunderstandings or the pressure to conform to societal expectations, can make everything feel a bit lighter. We even started meeting up regularly, and it has turned into a safe space where we can be ourselves without fear of judgment.
Another approach some of us take is to educate those around us whenever we can. It’s not always easy, but sharing our stories and traditions can help break down the barriers of stigma. For instance, when someone makes a comment that feels off, I try to respond with a bit of context about our culture. It can feel daunting, but many of us have found that even small conversations can plant seeds of understanding.
We also need to remember to take care of ourselves amidst this. It’s okay to step back sometimes and prioritize our mental health. Engaging in activities that celebrate our identity, like attending community events or cooking traditional meals, can help us reconnect with who we are and remind us of our strength.
How about you? Anyone else feeling the weight of stigma in your daily life? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — what’s your experience?
