How do you handle the stigma when people underestimate your worth due to your identity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of being underestimated because of our identity. Whether it’s due to mental health struggles, neurodiversity, or a chronic illness, the stigma can be heavy to carry. It’s disheartening when people assume our worth is tied solely to what they can see or understand. One thing that has helped me navigate this is focusing on our strengths and accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. For example, I’ve learned to celebrate even the tiniest victories, like getting out of bed on a tough day or completing a project that felt overwhelming. Keeping a journal dedicated to these moments not only boosts my self-esteem but also serves as a reminder that our worth isn’t defined by others’ perceptions. Another approach many of us find helpful is surrounding ourselves with people who truly understand our experiences. Having even one person in your life who gets the unique challenges we face can make a world of difference. I connected with someone who also feels the weight of stigma, and we started meeting regularly to share our thoughts and feelings. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in this, and it helps us reaffirm our worth together. Sometimes, when we encounter moments of doubt or judgment from others, practicing self-compassion can be a game changer. It’s easy to internalize negativity, but reminding ourselves that it’s okay to struggle and not meet everyone’s expectations helps. We’re navigating a complex world, and recognizing that our worth is inherent, not contingent on external validation, is crucial. What about you? How do you handle the stigma that comes with being underestimated? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands can change everything — I’d love to hear your experiences!
