Have you ever felt like your identity is just a passing trend? Many of us in the Kale Community have experienced that unsettling feeling, especially when our unique identities seem to be co-opted or romanticized by others. It can feel isolating when the authenticity of our experiences is questioned or reduced to a fad.
One thing that has helped me cope is focusing on the roots of my identity. I often remind myself that my experiences are valid and deeply personal, regardless of how others perceive them. I try to engage in conversations that celebrate the real, lived aspects of being part of this community. Sharing stories with others who understand the depth of this identity has been a game-changer. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in feeling dismissed or misunderstood.
Another approach that some of us find useful is actively seeking spaces where our identities are embraced and honored. Finding local meetups or online groups that discuss these issues in depth can help us feel more grounded. I remember connecting with someone nearby who also grapples with feeling like a trend. We started meeting up regularly, and it made such a difference. Having just one person who truly understands the complexities of this experience can provide validation and support that’s hard to find elsewhere.
It’s also important to give ourselves grace when we feel overwhelmed by the external noise. Many of us struggle with the pressure of societal expectations, and it's okay to take a step back and recharge. Setting boundaries around conversations or social media can help us protect our mental space.
Anyone else grappling with the feeling of being seen as "just a trend"? Sometimes just sharing our experiences with someone who truly gets it can change everything. What have you found helpful in navigating these feelings?
