How do you handle the jokes and stereotypes about being kale?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have felt the sting of jokes and stereotypes about being kale. It can be frustrating when people reduce our experiences to a punchline or a cliché. We know that being kale isn't just about the leafy green; it’s about our vibrant, complex identities and the challenges we face every day. One thing that has helped me navigate this is finding humor in it myself. When someone cracks a joke, I try to respond with a light-hearted comeback. It can be a way to reclaim the narrative and show that I’m not ashamed of who I am. For example, when someone refers to me as “the health nut,” I might say, “Well, at least I’m not a potato!” This approach doesn’t always work, but it can lighten the mood and remind others that we’re more than just a stereotype. Another strategy is to surround ourselves with supportive friends who understand what being kale truly means. Having a small group of people who get it can make a world of difference. We often share our experiences and laugh together about the ridiculousness of certain stereotypes. Just knowing there are others who share our frustrations can help us feel less alone. Recently, I found someone in my community who also identifies as kale, and we started meeting weekly. Having these conversations has made the hard days a little brighter. We might also consider using these moments as opportunities for education. When someone makes a joke that feels hurtful, it can be a chance to explain what being kale truly means to us. Many people don’t realize the depth behind our identity, and sharing our stories can help break down those stereotypes. Anyone else dealing with the jokes and stereotypes? It can be tough, but sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. What’s your experience?
