How do you cope with friends and family constantly asking about when you’re having kids?

Many of us know the feeling all too well: every gathering, every holiday, there’s that awkward moment when someone asks, “So, when are you having kids?” Suddenly, it feels like everyone’s eyes are on us, and it’s like we have to carry the weight of our whole journey on our shoulders. It can be really challenging, especially when we’re dealing with our own complicated feelings about infertility.
One thing that has helped me navigate these conversations is finding a few phrases that feel comfortable to say. For instance, something like, “We’re focusing on other things right now” can deflect the question without getting too personal. It’s amazing how just having a go-to response can ease that pressure. Plus, it can prompt a shift in the conversation, allowing us to talk about other things that matter to us.
Another approach some of us try is to share our experiences with a trusted friend or even a family member who understands what we’re going through. Having someone in your corner who gets it can make a world of difference. I found a friend going through similar struggles, and we started talking regularly. It’s been a relief to share our feelings and frustrations, and it helps to know I’m not alone in this.
We might also find it helpful to gently set boundaries with family and friends. If someone keeps asking, it’s okay to say something like, “I appreciate your interest, but it’s a tough topic for me.” Many of us have navigated the emotional rollercoaster of infertility, and honesty can sometimes lead to deeper understanding and, hopefully, compassion from those who care about us.
Sometimes the isolation can feel overwhelming, but connecting with even one person who lives through the same struggle makes it a bit easier. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you handle those questions? Would love to hear your experiences.
