Navigating social gatherings when everyone else seems to be starting families—how do you manage it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating social gatherings can feel like a minefield when it seems like everyone around us is starting families. Many of us have been there—watching friends share pregnancy announcements or discussing their kids while we’re in a space of longing and heartache. It can be hard not to feel like we’re on the outside looking in, and it’s totally okay to acknowledge that. One thing that has helped me is finding a few trusted friends who understand our struggles. If you can, try to connect with someone who’s been through a similar journey. Having even one person in your corner who gets it can make those gatherings less isolating. Recently, I started meeting up with a friend who has also faced infertility, and just being able to share our feelings openly has changed everything for me. We laugh, we cry, and we support each other in a way that feels safe. When we do attend gatherings, setting boundaries can be really important. You might find it helpful to arrive a little late or leave early when the talk turns to family planning or kids. It’s okay to excuse yourself if the conversation gets too overwhelming. We don’t have to force ourselves to engage in topics that feel painful. Another approach some of us try is to prepare a few go-to topics or questions to steer the conversation away from family and kids. It can be as simple as asking about travel plans or hobbies. This way, we can still participate without diving into uncomfortable territory. Plus, it helps to remind ourselves that our stories are just as valid and worthy of sharing. And let’s not forget the importance of self-care before and after these events. Taking time to check in with ourselves, whether through journaling or talking to someone who understands, can help us process any emotions that come up. It’s okay to feel a mix of joy for our friends and sadness for our situation. Anyone else dealing with this? Would love to hear how you manage social gatherings when it feels like everyone else is starting families. Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it makes all the difference.
