The overwhelming pressure of baby showers and family gatherings — how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating baby showers and family gatherings can feel like walking through a minefield for many of us dealing with infertility. The joyful celebrations often come with an overwhelming wave of emotions—everything from sadness to envy, and sometimes even anger. It’s tough when you want to be happy for friends and family, yet these events can be painful reminders of what we desperately want but haven’t been able to achieve. One thing that really helped me was having a plan before attending these gatherings. I’ve found that talking to a trusted friend or partner beforehand about how I’m feeling can make a huge difference. Sharing my anxieties with someone who understands can lighten the emotional load. Sometimes, just knowing there’s someone in my corner helps me cope with the uncomfortable questions or the well-meaning comments about when I’ll be having kids. Another approach that some of us find useful is setting boundaries. If you know that a particular gathering is going to be especially hard, it’s okay to skip it or leave early. I’ve had to remind myself that my mental health comes first, and it’s perfectly fine to prioritize my needs. Plus, connecting with others who share similar experiences has been a game changer. I found a couple of people in my circle who are also navigating infertility, and we agreed to check in with each other during these events. Just having one person who gets it can ease the burden of feeling so alone in a crowded room. Sometimes, it’s also helpful to have a few go-to responses for well-meaning questions about children. You might consider practicing a few phrases that feel comfortable for you. This way, when someone asks, “When are you having kids?” you can respond in a way that feels right, whether it’s with humor or a simple change of topic. Anyone else feeling the weight of these gatherings? What strategies have you found to make them a bit more manageable? It can really help to share our experiences and support each other through these tough moments.
