Dealing with stigma: have you faced judgment from friends or family, and how did you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how tough it can be to navigate relationships when we’re living with an HIV-positive status, even when we’re undetectable. The stigma around HIV can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes from those we care about most. It’s disheartening when friends or family pass judgment or make comments that reflect outdated beliefs. One thing that helped me cope was having honest conversations with a few close friends I trusted. I found that sharing my experiences and educating them about being undetectable really shifted their perspectives. It wasn’t easy at first; many of us worry about how our loved ones will react, but opening up can create a space for understanding. You might find that some people are more receptive than you expect, and that connection can help strengthen those relationships. Another approach some of us have found helpful is seeking out support networks, whether online or in-person. Connecting with others who understand what we’re going through can be a lifeline. I joined a local group where we share our experiences, and it’s comforting to know that I’m not alone in facing stigma. Plus, when we talk about our challenges, we can brainstorm ways to address judgment from others together. It’s also important to practice self-compassion. Some days will be harder than others, and that’s okay. If you encounter negativity, remind yourself that their judgments often come from ignorance rather than fact. Focusing on your health and happiness is key, and surrounding yourself with supportive people, even just one or two, can make a significant difference in how you cope. Anyone else dealing with stigma from friends or family? I’d love to hear how you’ve navigated these situations. Sometimes just sharing our stories helps lighten the load.
