Have you ever faced stigma in your workplace, and how did you cope with it?

Navigating the workplace can be tough for many of us, but facing stigma because of our HIV-positive status adds a whole new layer of complexity. Many of us have felt that weight of judgment or misunderstanding, whether it’s a sideways glance when we mention a doctor’s appointment or the uncomfortable silence that follows when we casually bring up our health. It can feel isolating, like we’re carrying a secret that others just don’t understand. One thing that helped me was opening up to a trusted coworker about my status. It wasn’t easy, and I worried about their reaction, but having even one person who truly understands made a difference. They became a supportive ally, and I found that talking about it in a safe space helped ease my anxiety. This connection not only made my workdays less stressful, but it also reminded me that I’m not alone in this. Another approach some of us try is finding community outside of work. Whether it’s connecting with others online or attending local meetups, having a group of people who get our experiences can be incredibly empowering. It’s a reminder that we are more than our status and that we share similar challenges. Sometimes just knowing there are others out there facing the same stigma helps us feel more resilient when we encounter it at work. It's also important to remember that we can advocate for ourselves. If stigma arises, addressing it directly, when possible, can create a teaching moment. Many of us have shared our experiences of educating colleagues about being undetectable and how it affects transmission risks. While it can feel daunting, standing up for ourselves can foster understanding and, hopefully, change perceptions in the long run. Has anyone else faced stigma in the workplace? I’d love to hear what strategies you’ve found helpful. Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference!
