Have you ever faced stigma in your social circles, and how did you handle it?

Many of us know that feeling of tension when we’re in social situations, particularly when our HIV-positive status comes up or when we sense that stigma is lurking beneath the surface. It can be tough — you might feel like you have to constantly navigate a minefield of misconceptions and judgments. The reality is, stigma can come even from those we thought would be understanding, and it can leave us feeling isolated and vulnerable. One thing that helped me was finding a small group of friends who really get it. When I first opened up about my status, I wasn’t sure how they’d react, but to my relief, they were supportive and curious in the best way. We started having honest conversations about living with HIV, and it made all the difference. Just knowing that I have people in my corner who understand the stigma and the emotions that come with it eases the burden. If you haven’t already, consider sharing your journey with someone you trust — you might be surprised by their response. Another approach some of us take is educating ourselves and others. When we encounter stigma, it can feel overwhelming, but arming ourselves with knowledge can empower us to respond to misconceptions. I’ve found that when I calmly share facts about HIV, especially about being undetectable and the science behind it, it helps break down those barriers. Sometimes, people just need a little guidance to understand what we’re really living with. It’s also important to remember to take care of our mental health in these situations. If a conversation feels too heavy or if someone’s reaction is particularly hurtful, it’s okay to step back and prioritize your well-being. Surrounding ourselves with supportive communities, whether online or locally, can be a lifeline. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can remind us that we’re not alone in facing stigma. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you navigate stigma in your own circles.
