Navigating the pressure to uphold family traditions while finding my own voice as a Griot/Jali

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us might feel the weight of family traditions pressing down on us, especially as Griots or Jalis. We carry the legacy of our ancestors, the stories and songs that have been passed down through generations, but sometimes it feels overwhelming to balance that with our own desire to express who we are in the present. It can be tough to honor our heritage while also carving out our unique voice. One thing that has helped me navigate this tension is finding ways to blend tradition with personal expression. For instance, I started experimenting with my storytelling style by incorporating modern themes or personal experiences into traditional tales. This not only honors my roots but also allows me to bring something fresh to the table. Sharing these new interpretations with trusted friends or family members can spark conversations that help bridge the gap between tradition and individuality. Another approach some of us try is connecting with other Griots or Jalis who are also exploring their voices. Having someone to share our struggles with can make a huge difference. I found a few fellow storytellers in my community, and we began meeting regularly to discuss our experiences and share our work. Just knowing there are others who understand the pressure to uphold traditions while also wanting to innovate has been really encouraging. Sometimes, the fear of not being accepted can hold us back. You might worry about how your family will receive your new ideas or styles. It’s okay to feel that way! But remember, many of us carry that same fear. Finding even one person who resonates with your journey can make you feel less isolated. Sharing our stories with one another, even if it’s just in a small group, can alleviate some of that pressure. Anyone else wrestling with this balance? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands can help lighten the load. I’d love to hear what you’re experiencing and how you’re navigating your own path!
