How do you navigate the pressure to keep cultural traditions alive while also modernizing your storytelling?

Many of us in the Griot/Jali community feel the weight of our cultural traditions, like a beautiful tapestry woven with stories, songs, and history. Yet, as we navigate the modern world, we often grapple with the pressure to keep those traditions alive while also wanting to tell our stories in ways that resonate with today's audience. It can feel like a balancing act, right? One thing that’s helped me is finding ways to blend traditional forms with contemporary elements. For instance, I’ve started incorporating social media into my storytelling. Sharing snippets of our tales through short videos or posts allows me to reach a wider audience while keeping the essence of our culture. It’s exciting to see how people engage with these stories, and I often get messages from others who share our heritage, creating a sense of connection that feels so enriching. Another approach some of us have found useful is collaborating with others in our community. Many of us have different perspectives on storytelling, and by coming together, we can create something that honors our past while also feeling fresh and relevant. I teamed up with a few friends to host a storytelling night where we each brought our unique styles. The feedback was incredible, and it reminded me that we don’t have to carry this tradition alone — sharing our voices can make it even more powerful. I won’t sugarcoat it; it can be challenging to navigate the expectations from our elders who may feel we’re straying too far from the roots. There’s that fear of losing something vital, but I’ve found that having even a few supportive friends who understand these struggles makes all the difference. We meet regularly to talk about our experiences, which helps us feel less isolated and more empowered to innovate while respecting our heritage.
