Sharing stories in the family: How do you balance healing and keeping traditions alive?

Many of us in the Griot or Jali Community know how deeply our stories and traditions are woven into the fabric of our families. They connect us to our ancestors, our culture, and each other. But as we navigate healing, especially from the weight of trauma or loss, it can feel challenging to keep those traditions alive while also addressing our personal journeys.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to share my story during family gatherings without overshadowing the traditions we hold dear. For instance, when we sit around the table, I might share a memory that connects a family story to my own healing process. This opens a door for others to reflect on their experiences, too. It’s incredible how sharing our truths can create a safe space for others to do the same.
Another approach I've found useful is creating new traditions that honor both our past and present. Maybe it’s as simple as starting a storytelling circle, where each person takes a turn sharing a story that resonates with them. This way, we’re not just recounting the past but actively participating in our healing. It can feel empowering to contribute a new chapter to our family narrative while still acknowledging where we come from.
Of course, balancing this can be tough. Many of us might feel the weight of expectations around certain traditions, especially during significant celebrations. It’s okay to set boundaries and express when a particular tradition feels overwhelming or triggering. Having conversations with family members about our individual needs can foster understanding and support.
Connecting with someone who shares this experience can also ease the burden. I found a cousin who feels similarly about the balance between tradition and healing, and we’ve started having regular chats about it. Just knowing we’re not alone in this has made a huge difference.
Anyone else feeling the tension between honoring family traditions and your own healing journey? I’d love to hear how you navigate this balance and what stories help you connect with your roots!
