Navigating the expectations of being a family storyteller while balancing my own narrative

Many of us know the weight that comes with being a family storyteller, or griot, in our communities. There’s a deep sense of pride in carrying on our traditions and sharing our family narratives, but it can also feel overwhelming. Balancing the expectations to keep our stories alive while trying to honor our own personal journeys can be a tricky tightrope walk.
One thing that has helped me is setting aside time to reflect on my own experiences before diving into storytelling. It’s easy to get caught up in what others expect us to share — the tales of triumph, struggle, and resilience that define our lineage. But taking a moment to jot down my own thoughts and feelings can help me reclaim my narrative. This practice not only brings clarity but also allows us to weave our own story into the broader tapestry of our family’s history.
Another approach is to connect with fellow griots who understand this unique struggle. I found someone in my community who also grapples with the tension between personal and familial storytelling. We started sharing our thoughts regularly — discussing how our experiences shape the stories we tell and the pressure we feel to maintain certain narratives. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this can be a game-changer. It’s comforting to know you’re not alone in this journey.
We should also remember that it’s okay to set boundaries. Sometimes, family members may have their own expectations about how their stories should be told, and that can feel suffocating. Learning to express our limits around storytelling has been an important step for many of us. It allows us to honor our family while also ensuring that our voices and experiences are not lost in the mix.
Navigating the expectations of being a family storyteller while balancing our own narratives can be daunting, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Anyone else feeling this tension? I’d love to hear how you’re managing the stories you share and the stories you live.
