Feeling the pressure of cultural expectations as a Garo — how do you cope with it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating the pressures of cultural expectations as a Garo can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us experience that constant tug between honoring our traditions and carving out our own paths. Whether it’s the weight of family expectations regarding marriage, career choices, or even how we express our identity, it can be overwhelming. One thing that has really helped me is finding a small group of fellow Garos who share similar experiences. We started meeting up regularly, and it felt liberating to vent about the pressures we face. Just having one or two people who truly understand the nuances of our culture made those tough discussions feel lighter. We share stories about how we navigate familial expectations, and it’s comforting to know we're not alone in this. Another approach I’ve found useful is setting personal boundaries. For example, if family gatherings become too much or discussions about marriage start to feel suffocating, I try to communicate my feelings openly. It’s not always easy, and sometimes those conversations don't go as planned, but standing firm in what feels right for me has been empowering. It’s a process of learning to prioritize my own happiness while still respecting my roots. We also can’t overlook the importance of celebrating our culture in ways that feel authentic to us. Whether it’s through art, music, or community events, finding ways to honor our Garo identity on our own terms can be a beautiful outlet. I’ve started incorporating traditional elements into my personal life, but in a way that reflects who I am today. This has brought me a sense of pride and connection, reminding me that our culture can adapt and evolve. Anyone else feeling the pressure of cultural expectations? It can feel isolating at times, but I think sharing our experiences can really lighten the load. What has helped you cope with these challenges?
