How do you navigate cultural expectations while staying true to yourself as a Garo?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us Garo folks know the struggle of balancing cultural expectations with our own sense of self. It can feel like we’re walking a tightrope—trying to honor our traditions and the values instilled in us while also carving out space for our individual identities. It’s not easy, and some days it feels downright overwhelming. One thing that helps me navigate this is finding ways to incorporate our Garo traditions into my daily life without losing sight of who I am. For instance, I cherish our festivals, but I also love to celebrate them in a way that feels authentic to me. Maybe that means blending traditional attire with a modern twist or choosing specific rituals that resonate more with my personal beliefs. This way, I can still participate in our rich culture while honoring my own unique perspective. Another approach I’ve found valuable is connecting with other Garo individuals who share similar experiences. Having even one person to talk to can make a huge difference. I met a friend through a community gathering, and we started discussing our challenges—like the pressure from family to conform to certain expectations. Just sharing those feelings and hearing someone else say, "I get it," has been incredibly validating. It reminds us that we’re not alone in this journey, and we can navigate it together. Sometimes, it can also be helpful to set boundaries around cultural expectations. It’s okay to say no to certain pressures that don’t align with who we are. For example, if a family member expects you to follow a specific career path that doesn’t resonate with you, having a compassionate conversation about your dreams can be a step toward staying true to yourself while also respecting your roots. Anyone else navigating this balance? It can be tough, but sharing our stories and experiences might just help us find that sweet spot between honoring our culture and being our true selves. Would love to hear what’s worked for you!
