Experiences of feeling misunderstood or judged by those outside the Garo community

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Garo community have felt that sting of being misunderstood or judged by those who don't share our experiences. It can be frustrating and isolating when our identity, culture, or beliefs are questioned or dismissed. Sometimes, it feels like we’re caught between wanting to express our pride in who we are and the fear of how others might react. One thing I’ve noticed is that even casual conversations can become tricky. When people ask about our customs or traditions, it can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a chance to share our rich heritage, but on the other, we risk being met with stereotypes or misguided assumptions. I find it helps to prepare a few personal anecdotes or positive stories about our culture that reflect the Garo spirit. This way, when someone asks, I can share something meaningful instead of feeling like I’m defending my identity. Another challenge is dealing with judgment regarding our lifestyle choices. Many of us have faced comments about our food, dress, or even the way we celebrate festivals. It’s tough to hear someone say something negative, especially when those traditions are so integral to who we are. Finding a supportive space — like talking with others from our community — has been so valuable. I remember connecting with a few friends to share our experiences, and it was comforting to realize we all faced similar situations. Sometimes, just knowing we’re not alone makes a world of difference. The isolation can feel heavy at times, but I’ve found that reaching out to others who understand the Garo experience can lighten the load. Even a simple chat about our day-to-day lives or how we navigate the world can remind us that we’re not alone in these feelings. It’s those connections that help us feel more grounded and confident in our identities. Anyone else feeling this struggle with being misunderstood? It can be tough, but I’d love to hear your stories and what’s helped you navigate these conversations. Let's share our experiences and support one another!
