What do you do when the urge to gamble hits unexpectedly during social events?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We’ve all been there: you’re at a social event, the music is pumping, and everyone seems to be having a great time. But then, out of nowhere, that familiar urge to gamble hits you like a wave. It can feel isolating, especially when it seems like no one else is struggling with the same thing. Many of us know how overwhelming those moments can be, and we’ve had to figure out ways to cope. One thing that’s really helped me is having a solid plan in place before I attend any event. I often think about what could trigger my urge to gamble and prepare myself for those moments. For example, if I know there might be a casino-themed party or a gambling game being played, I’ll remind myself of the reasons I’m in recovery and how much I’ve worked to overcome this. Having a mantra or a few affirmations can be a lifesaver during those times. Another approach some of us try is reaching out to a fellow community member before the event. Having even one person who truly understands this struggle can make a world of difference. I remember texting a friend before a party, sharing my worries about the urge to gamble. Just knowing they were there for support gave me the strength to enjoy the night without giving in to temptation. Plus, it’s a reminder that we don’t have to face these challenges alone. When the urge hits, I’ve also found it helpful to have a distraction plan ready. Whether it's stepping outside for fresh air, engaging in a quick chat with someone, or even having a small fidget toy in my pocket, these simple actions can help shift my focus and ground me in the moment. Sometimes, just taking a breather and reminding myself of the positive steps I’ve taken can make a difference. Anyone else dealing with this? It can feel really tough navigating social situations when those urges pop up unexpectedly. I’d love to hear what’s helped you manage those moments.
