How do you navigate social situations where gambling is a central activity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling when social situations revolve around gambling. It can be tough, especially when everyone else seems to be having a great time while you’re grappling with your own feelings about it. Sometimes, it feels like the world is throwing cards and chips in our faces when all we want is to feel safe and connected without the temptation. One thing that’s really helped me is being upfront about my journey. When I find myself in a setting where gambling is the main activity, I try to share my story with at least one person there. It could be as simple as saying, "I’m not comfortable with gambling anymore, but I’d still love to hang out." You might find that others appreciate your honesty, and it opens the door for conversations that really matter. I found someone at a gathering who’s also in recovery, and we ended up chatting about our experiences instead of the games. That made the night so much more enjoyable! Another approach some of us find useful is suggesting alternative activities. If you know a social event is coming up, you might propose something that doesn’t center around gambling. Maybe a game night with board games or a movie marathon? This way, you can still enjoy time with friends without feeling that pull. And if you’re feeling brave, why not host an event yourself? It’s a great way to set the tone and bring people together for fun without the risks. It’s also important to have an exit strategy. If you start feeling overwhelmed, having a plan can help. Maybe you tell a friend you trust that you might need to step outside for a breather. Sometimes just taking a moment away from the situation can make a huge difference in how we feel. Anyone else navigating these kinds of social situations? It can feel isolating, but just talking about it can lighten the load. How have you managed to stay connected while keeping your recovery on track?
