The guilt and shame when I think about past debts – how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the weight of guilt and shame that comes with thinking about past debts linked to our gambling experiences. It can feel like a constant shadow, reminding us of the choices we wish we could change. If you're anything like me, you might find yourself spiraling into those feelings, replaying old mistakes and feeling overwhelmed by what we've lost. One thing that has helped me is being open about my experiences with others who truly understand. I started talking to someone in recovery who had faced similar struggles. Sharing our stories not only lightened the burden but also helped us to see that we’re not alone in this. Sometimes, just saying the words out loud to someone who gets it can help alleviate that crushing guilt. It’s like a breath of fresh air when you realize that others have walked this path too. Another approach that some of us find useful is focusing on the present and future instead of dwelling on the past. I try to set small, achievable goals for myself, whether that's saving a little money each week or finding new hobbies to fill my time. It’s not an easy shift, but concentrating on what we can do today can help us feel more in control. It’s about building a new narrative, one that includes hope and possibility rather than just regret and shame. Many of us also find it helpful to practice self-compassion. This journey is tough, and we’re all human. Instead of beating ourselves up for past decisions, we can acknowledge that we are learning and growing. Sometimes, writing down affirmations or reminders of our progress can help reinforce that we are not defined by our past debts. How do you cope with those feelings of guilt and shame? It can be so healing to connect with someone who understands. I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you along the way.
