How do you cope with urges on days when you feel particularly stressed or overwhelmed?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know those days when stress feels like an avalanche, and the urge to gamble can hit like a freight train. It’s overwhelming, and sometimes it feels like we’re on a tightrope, just trying to keep our balance. On those tough days, we might feel the familiar pull towards gambling as a way to escape or cope, even when we know it’s not the solution we really want. One thing that has helped me is to create a list of distractions that work for me. Whether it’s diving into a hobby, going for a walk, or even just binge-watching a favorite show, having those go-to activities on hand can really make a difference. When the cravings hit, I remind myself to reach for that list instead. It’s a small shift, but it’s about choosing something that supports my recovery instead of sabotaging it. Another strategy that many of us find beneficial is reaching out to someone who understands. It can be a real game-changer to talk to someone who gets what we’re going through. I found a buddy in this community, and we text each other on particularly tough days. Just knowing there’s someone on the other end who understands those urges can be comforting. It helps to share our struggles and victories, no matter how small. We also might try to practice mindfulness. I know it sounds cliché sometimes, but taking a few minutes to breathe and ground ourselves can really help clear the fog. Whether it’s through meditation, journaling, or even just sitting quietly with our thoughts, these moments can give us a clearer perspective on our feelings and urges. Finally, let’s not forget the importance of self-compassion. Many of us can be our own worst critics, especially when we feel the pull of gambling. It’s okay to acknowledge that we’re struggling; it doesn’t define us. Reminding ourselves of how far we’ve come can help shift that inner dialogue to something more supportive. Anyone else dealing with those overwhelming days? What’s your go-to strategy when the urges come knocking? Sometimes just talking about it can ease the burden a little.
