How do you navigate relationships with friends who still gamble?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how challenging it can be to navigate friendships when gambling is still a part of those lives. It can feel isolating to be on a different path, especially when you’re trying to stay committed to your recovery while your friends are still caught up in the thrill of gambling. This can lead to feelings of frustration, sadness, or even resentment at times. One thing that has helped me is setting clear boundaries. It’s okay to communicate to your friends that you’re focusing on your recovery and that being around gambling can be triggering for you. For example, if they invite you to places like casinos or events where gambling is involved, it’s perfectly fine to politely decline. We can still cherish our friendships without putting our recovery at risk. Another approach is looking for common ground outside of gambling. Many of us find that suggesting alternative activities — like going for coffee, hiking, or just hanging out at home — can keep those connections alive. I even found a group of friends who share similar interests that don’t revolve around gambling. Having those connections makes it easier to say no to the gambling scenes and still feel included. You might also consider finding someone within our community to talk to about these experiences. I started chatting with another member who understands the complexities of maintaining friendships while in recovery. Just having that one person to relate to makes it easier to navigate these challenging situations. Sometimes, sharing our feelings can lighten the load and remind us we’re not alone in this. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you manage friendships when gambling is still a big part of the picture? I’d love to hear your thoughts and what’s worked for you.
