How do you navigate job interviews when your past is on your record?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating job interviews when you have a past on your record can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that sinking feeling when we’re asked about our history — it can bring up so much anxiety and self-doubt. It’s tough to shake off the stigma that sometimes feels like it follows us everywhere, especially when we’re trying to make a fresh start. One thing that’s helped me is practicing how to talk about my past. I’ve found that being honest, but also framing it in a way that shows growth, can make a big difference. For instance, instead of just saying what happened, I talk about what I learned from it and how it shaped me into a better person. Many of us have faced similar experiences, and connecting with someone who understands can really help refine that narrative. Sharing practice interviews with a friend in the community made it feel less daunting. Another strategy is to focus on the skills we’ve developed along the way. Whether it’s resilience, problem-solving, or even empathy, we all have unique strengths that employers value. Highlighting these can shift the conversation away from our past and onto what we bring to the table. If you can find someone to role-play interview scenarios with, it can make a world of difference. Having that support can help us feel less isolated and more prepared. And let’s not forget about the power of networking. Many of us have found that connecting with people who have similar experiences can open doors. Sometimes, it’s not just what’s on paper, but who you know. Joining local support groups or attending events can help you meet others who may have leads on job opportunities. That sense of community can lift us up during tough times. Has anyone else dealt with this? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s worked for you. Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything.
