How do you navigate job searches when your past keeps coming up?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating job searches can feel like an uphill battle, especially when our past keeps resurfacing. Many of us know that familiar mix of anxiety and dread when a potential employer asks about our history. It’s frustrating, to say the least, and can sometimes make us feel like we’re stuck in a loop of rejection. One thing that really helped me was being upfront about my past during interviews, but only when I felt comfortable. I found that sharing my story in a way that emphasizes growth can turn the narrative around. Instead of just focusing on what happened, I try to highlight what I learned and how far I’ve come since then. This shift in perspective has led to some surprisingly positive conversations. Another approach some of us have tried is finding roles in organizations that actively support second chances. There are companies out there that prioritize hiring individuals with lived experiences like ours. Connecting with these employers can feel more validating; it’s empowering to see them value the resilience we bring to the table. I once reached out to a local nonprofit that focuses on reentry support, and they not only helped with job leads but also connected me with others who were navigating the same challenges. Networking has also been key for many of us. Having even one person in your corner who understands what you’re going through can make a world of difference. Sometimes just sharing your experiences with someone who's been there can lead to opportunities you might not have considered. I found a small group of people who meet regularly to share job leads and offer support — it’s been great to have that kind of community. It’s tough, and some days can feel overwhelming, but remember that we’re not alone in this. Anyone else dealing with this? What strategies have you found helpful in your job search? Let’s share our experiences and support each other along the way.
