How do you navigate friendships with people who can't understand your past?

Navigating friendships after being incarcerated can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have faced the challenge of reconnecting with friends who may not fully understand our past or the experiences that shaped us. It can be tough when those we once relied on suddenly seem distant or unsure of how to relate to us now.
One thing that really helped me was being open about my journey. It wasn’t easy at first, but sharing my story with friends who genuinely care made a difference. I found that when I took the time to explain my experiences, many of them were more willing to listen and learn. By giving them insight into what I went through, we could bridge the gap and rebuild our connection. For instance, when I shared how difficult it was to reintegrate and navigate everyday life, it opened up conversations that brought us closer instead of pushing us apart.
Another approach some of us try is finding others who have gone through similar experiences. Connecting with people who truly understand the challenges of being formerly incarcerated can be a game-changer. I met someone in a support group who has become a close friend. We meet up regularly, and just having that one person who gets it has made those tough moments feel a little less isolating. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sharing a meal and talking about our journeys — it reminds me I’m not alone in this.
It’s also important to recognize that not everyone will get it, and that’s okay. Some friends might not know how to respond or may unintentionally say things that hurt. It’s helpful to set boundaries and protect your energy. If a conversation feels too heavy or triggering, it’s perfectly fine to excuse yourself and take a step back. Surrounding ourselves with those who are willing to listen and learn is vital.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands can change everything — what’s your experience been like?
