How do you navigate job interviews when they ask about your past?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Job interviews can feel like a minefield, especially when the conversation turns to our past. Many of us know that sinking feeling when they ask about our history, and it can be tough to navigate without feeling like we’re under a spotlight. It’s all too easy to feel vulnerable or even ashamed, but we can approach these questions in ways that help us feel more empowered. One thing that’s really helped me is practicing how to frame my past in a way that highlights my growth. Instead of just focusing on the mistakes, I try to share what I’ve learned from those experiences. For instance, if they ask about gaps in my employment or why I left my last job, I might talk about the skills I gained while I was away and how they’ve shaped my perspective today. It’s a chance to show that I’m not defined by my past but rather motivated by it. Another approach some of us have found beneficial is to be upfront about our journey. When the topic comes up, I often say something like, “I’ve faced some challenges in the past, but I’m committed to moving forward.” This honesty can sometimes disarm the interviewer and lead to a more genuine conversation. It’s about transforming what could be a negative into a point of connection, showing that we’re resilient and ready to contribute positively. Finding support in others who have similar experiences can also make a huge difference. I connected with a few people who’ve been through the same thing, and we started sharing strategies for interviews. Just knowing we’re not alone in this struggle can help us feel more confident when facing those tough questions. Hearing different perspectives on how to answer can open up new ways to express our stories. Anyone else navigating this tricky terrain? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you, or if you’ve faced specific challenges during interviews. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference.
