Struggling with the loss of community after leaving — how do you cope?

Many of us know the feeling of walking away from a community that shaped so much of our lives, especially when it’s one as tightly knit and influential as the Church. Leaving can feel like losing not just a group of friends, but a whole support system that was intertwined with our identities. It’s a tough transition, and that sense of loss can be overwhelming.
One thing that has helped me cope is finding new spaces where I can share my experiences and feel understood. Connecting with others who have also stepped away from the Church has been invaluable. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in this journey. I remember meeting up with a few people I met online who share similar stories. We started a weekly coffee chat, and just having that consistent touchpoint made the hard days a bit lighter. We could talk openly about our feelings of loss, confusion, and even relief without judgment.
Another approach some of us try is creating new rituals or traditions that resonate with who we are now. It can feel like a way to reclaim our identities outside of the church. For example, I started hosting a monthly game night with friends I’ve made since leaving. It’s a fun way to build new connections and create our own sense of community. Plus, it gives us all something to look forward to, which can be a great reminder that we can still have fun and enjoy life without the ties we once had.
Navigating the feelings of isolation can be tough, especially when it seems like everyone else has moved on with their lives. But reaching out to someone, even just to vent or share a memory, can make a huge difference. You might find that others are feeling just as lost and are looking for that connection too.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes it helps to just talk about it with someone who gets it. What’s been your experience in finding a new community?
