Navigating family gatherings as the only ex-Mormon can feel like walking a tightrope, can’t it? Many of us know that strange mix of nostalgia and discomfort when we’re surrounded by family who still hold tight to the beliefs we’ve stepped away from. It can be tough to feel like the odd one out, especially when the conversations often revolve around church activities and testimonies that no longer resonate with us.
One thing that has helped me is preparing some light topics of conversation ahead of time. I try to think of shared interests that aren’t tied to our former faith, like hobbies, travel, or even just funny family stories. This way, when the inevitable questions about church or beliefs come up, I can steer the conversation to something we can all enjoy — and it helps to ease that tension a bit.
Another approach some of us try is finding a supportive ally in the family. If you have a sibling or cousin who understands your journey, it can make a world of difference. Just having one person who gets it can provide a sense of comfort and even act as a buffer during those awkward moments. I remember sitting next to my sister at a recent gathering, and we shared knowing glances whenever the conversation turned toward topics that felt a bit too much. It was like having a lifeline.
And let’s not forget about self-care. Giving ourselves permission to step away for a moment is essential. If things get overwhelming, taking a quick break — even just a walk outside or a moment in the bathroom to breathe — can help us recharge. Many of us have been there, feeling the weight of those unspoken expectations. It’s okay to take a breather.
Finally, it’s important to remind ourselves that it’s okay to feel a bit out of place. We’re navigating our own paths, and that journey is valid. Sometimes just talking to one person who understands what we’re going through can help lighten the load. Anyone else dealing with this during family gatherings? What strategies have you found helpful to make it through? Would love to hear your experiences!
