How do you navigate family gatherings where being Ex-Mormon feels like a taboo topic?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family gatherings as an Ex-Mormon can feel like walking on eggshells, can’t it? Many of us know that sense of anxiety when we step into a space filled with family members who may not fully understand or accept our journey. It can be tough when the very topic that shaped so much of our lives suddenly feels like a taboo subject. One thing that has helped me is setting personal boundaries around what I’m comfortable discussing. Before gatherings, I try to remind myself that it's okay to steer conversations away from sensitive topics. If someone brings up the church, I might redirect by discussing a shared interest or a recent event. This way, I can participate without diving into a subject that feels like a minefield. It’s all about maintaining my peace while still engaging with family. Another approach is finding a supportive ally within the family. Maybe there’s a cousin or sibling who understands your journey. Having even just one person who gets it can make a huge difference. I remember sitting next to my cousin at a recent family dinner. We ended up sharing a few knowing glances when discussions turned towards church activities. Afterward, we caught up privately and it felt so validating to connect on our shared experiences. It’s also important to practice self-compassion. Many of us may feel guilt or sadness about how our relationships have changed since leaving the church. Acknowledging those feelings can be really freeing. Sometimes, just giving ourselves permission to feel uncomfortable or even sad can help us navigate these gatherings with more grace. At the end of the day, we all want to be heard and valued, but it’s okay if that doesn’t happen in every family interaction. Just remember, you’re not alone in this. Anyone else dealing with this at family gatherings? What’s helped you navigate those tricky conversations? I’d love to hear your experiences!
