How do you navigate relationships with family members who are still actively practicing Mormons?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating relationships with family members who are still actively practicing Mormons can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that mix of love, frustration, and longing for understanding. We might find ourselves wanting to share our new perspectives while also feeling the weight of their beliefs. It can be really tough, especially during family gatherings where the differences in our paths become glaringly obvious. One thing that has helped me is establishing boundaries that honor both my journey and theirs. For example, I’ve found it useful to communicate openly about topics that might trigger tension, like religious discussions. Before family dinners, I try to gently suggest we focus on shared interests instead—like our favorite movies or memories from childhood. This way, we can still connect without diving into potentially explosive conversations. It’s not always easy, but stepping back from those contentious topics has made our time together more enjoyable. Another approach many of us take is finding allies within the family. If there’s a relative who’s more understanding or perhaps has also stepped away from the church, leaning on them can be a game-changer. Having someone in your corner during family events can help ease the tension and provide a sense of solidarity. I connected with a cousin who’s been through a similar journey, and just knowing I wasn’t alone made family interactions a lot less daunting. Sometimes, the isolation we feel is the hardest part. It’s common to feel like we’re living in two worlds—wanting to be part of family traditions but recognizing we don’t fit in the same way anymore. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this can make all the difference. I found a small group of friends who share my background, and we often swap stories about our family dynamics. Just knowing I have people who get it has been a huge relief. Anyone else navigating these waters? How do you handle family relationships while staying true to yourself? It’d be great to hear what’s worked for you.
