How do you navigate family gatherings when you’re the only ex-Mormon in the room?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family gatherings as the only ex-Mormon can feel like walking a tightrope, can’t it? Many of us have experienced that awkward moment when the conversation shifts to faith, and suddenly, it feels like all eyes are on you. It can be isolating, especially when you’re surrounded by familiar faces who share beliefs that no longer resonate with you. One thing that has helped me is setting some personal boundaries ahead of time. Before family gatherings, I like to remind myself that it’s okay to redirect conversations if they get too uncomfortable. If someone brings up a topic that feels loaded or invasive, I gently steer the chat toward something more neutral, like a recent family trip or a funny story. It feels good to take control of the conversation, and it often eases the tension for everyone involved. Another approach that has worked for many of us is finding a friendly ally in the family. If you can connect with someone who understands your journey, it makes navigating those gatherings a bit easier. I found that having just one family member who’s supportive can really change the dynamic. We started sharing knowing glances during tough conversations, and even whispered jokes to lighten the mood. It reminds me that I’m not alone, even in a room where I might feel that way. It’s also important to give ourselves permission to take breaks if things get overwhelming. If the atmosphere feels charged or if topics get too personal, stepping outside for a breather can work wonders. This little time away can help reset your mind and heart, allowing you to re-engage with family when you're ready. Lastly, I try to focus on what I do enjoy about these gatherings — the food, the laughter, and the shared memories. Finding joy in small moments can make the bigger challenges feel a bit lighter. It’s a reminder that while our paths may have diverged, there are still connections worth cherishing. Anyone else navigating these family dynamics? Would love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you through those tricky moments!
