How do you navigate family gatherings when everyone still practices the faith?

Family gatherings can be a real rollercoaster for many of us who have stepped away from the faith we grew up with. It’s tough navigating those spaces where everyone else still practices, and you might feel like a fish out of water. The pressure to conform to traditions or rituals can be overwhelming, and the fear of judgment or misunderstanding looms large.
One thing that has helped me is setting boundaries for myself before I go. I think about what I’m comfortable discussing and what topics I’d rather avoid. If the conversation starts to veer into areas that feel uncomfortable, I’ve learned to gracefully steer it back or change the subject. It’s not always easy, but having a plan helps me feel more in control.
Another strategy some of us find useful is bringing a friend or partner along if that’s an option. Having someone who understands your journey can provide a comforting sense of support. Plus, it gives you a little space to step away if things get too intense. I remember once I brought a friend to a family dinner, and just having them there made it feel less isolating. We ended up having a great time bonding over our shared experiences, and it reminded me that I’m not alone in this.
It’s also okay to lean into the moments that feel good. Sometimes, focusing on the aspects of family gatherings that you enjoy—like catching up with a cousin or sharing a laugh—can make the experience more bearable. Many of us have found that finding joy in those small interactions helps balance out the heaviness of the larger context.
Lastly, if you’re comfortable, consider having one-on-one conversations with family members who you think might be more understanding. It can be a relief to share your feelings with someone who might get it or be more open to discussing faith outside the usual family dynamics. It can help bridge that gap and create a sense of connection again.
Anyone else feeling the strain of family gatherings when you’re not on the same page with faith anymore? It really helps to share our experiences and find understanding in one another. What’s worked for you in these situations?
