Navigating family gatherings after leaving Hasidic life — how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be some of the most challenging spaces for those of us who have left Hasidic life. The mix of nostalgia, tension, and sometimes outright discomfort can feel overwhelming. Many of us have experienced that tug-of-war between wanting to maintain connections and feeling suffocated by the very culture we’ve stepped away from. One thing that often helps is setting clear boundaries for ourselves before attending these gatherings. It might be as simple as deciding how long you’ll stay or what topics you’re willing to discuss. For example, if you know that certain subjects, like your lifestyle choices, will lead to uncomfortable conversations, having a plan to steer the discussion toward neutral ground can really help. Another approach some of us find useful is to bring along a friend or someone who understands our journey. Having even one person in your corner who gets it can lighten the emotional load. I remember one gathering where I felt completely out of place until my friend chimed in with a joke that broke the tension. It reminded me that I wasn't alone in the experience, and it made the hard moments easier. You might also consider creating a signal with your support person to indicate when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just a quick glance or a nod can help you both navigate the situation, giving you the chance to step away or take a breather when needed. And if it feels right, sharing bits of your new life can sometimes open up conversations that feel more authentic. You might find that some family members are curious or even supportive, which can help bridge that gap and make the gathering feel a little less isolating. Anyone else dealing with this at family gatherings? It’s tough, but sometimes just connecting with someone who understands what we're going through can change everything. What strategies have you found helpful?
