How do you navigate family gatherings when you feel so different from your relatives?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be a real mixed bag for many of us from the Ex-Hasidic community. On one hand, there's that familiar warmth and shared history, but on the other, it can feel overwhelming when we realize just how different we are from our relatives. The questions about our choices, the expectations around lifestyle, and sometimes even the judgment can really weigh us down. One thing that has helped me navigate these gatherings is finding common ground with family members who might not fully get my journey but still care about me. Maybe it’s a shared interest in cooking or a favorite childhood memory we can reminisce about. Focusing on these connections can ease some of the tension. Talking about something we both love — like a favorite dish from our upbringing — can create a bridge that feels safe and less confrontational. Another approach some of us find useful is setting boundaries before the gathering. Being honest about what topics are off-limits can help protect our emotional well-being. It’s perfectly okay to say, “I’d rather not discuss my choices right now,” or to steer conversations toward neutral topics. This way, we can enjoy the time with family without feeling like we’re constantly under a spotlight. Also, if you’re comfortable, it might help to bring along a supportive friend or partner. Having someone by our side who understands our journey can make those family dynamics feel a lot less daunting. Just knowing there’s someone who gets it can be a game-changer when things start to feel overwhelming. Ultimately, many of us know that navigating these gatherings can feel isolating. But finding one or two relatives who are more open-minded can make a huge difference. I found a cousin who’s been really supportive — we started catching up regularly, and it’s been such a relief to have someone in the family who understands where I’m coming from. Anyone else having similar experiences with family gatherings? It can feel tough, but sometimes just connecting with someone who gets it makes all the difference — what’s worked for you?
