Navigating family expectations during holidays after leaving the community

🌱 Belong Community Resource
The holiday season can stir up a lot of mixed emotions for many of us who have left the Hasidic community. We might feel the pull of family traditions, but there’s also this weight of expectation that can feel suffocating. Many of us know that bittersweet feeling of wanting to participate but also grappling with our own identities and choices. One thing that has helped me navigate this tricky terrain is setting clear boundaries with family. For instance, if you’re not comfortable attending certain gatherings, it’s okay to politely decline. Instead, you might suggest a different way to connect, like a video call or a small, more intimate meet-up. This way, you can still feel connected without compromising who you are. Another approach some of us try is finding small ways to honor our past while embracing our present. Maybe that means cooking a traditional dish that reminds you of home but adding your own twist to it. It’s a reminder of where we came from, but also of the new path we’re carving out for ourselves. The isolation can be overwhelming, especially during holidays when families gather. One thing that made a big difference for me was finding others who understand this journey. I connected with a few people from our community, and we started sharing our experiences during the holidays. Just having someone to talk to about the challenges we face made everything feel a bit lighter. Anyone else feeling the weight of family expectations during the holidays? It can be tough, but sometimes just sharing our stories with someone who gets it can change everything. Would love to hear how you navigate this time of year!
