Feeling guilt or shame about leaving — how do you process those feelings?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Ex-Hasidic community know that leaving can come with a heavy load of guilt and shame. It’s not just about stepping away from a way of life; it’s about leaving behind family, friends, and the deep-rooted traditions that shaped us. The conflicting emotions can feel overwhelming, and it's totally okay to admit that. One thing that helped me was finding a group of people who truly understand what it's like to break away from such a tightly-knit community. Sharing our stories made a world of difference. It was comforting to realize that we’re not alone in feeling this way. If you can, reach out to someone who’s been through a similar journey. Having even one person in your life who gets it can help ease that burden of guilt. We can talk about the beauty we’ve lost and the new freedoms we’re carving out for ourselves. Another approach some of us try is reflecting on the reasons we left in the first place. It’s easy to get caught up in the emotional turmoil of guilt, but remembering why we made our choices can help ground us. Jotting down those thoughts can be incredibly freeing. It reminds us that we were brave in seeking a life that aligns with who we truly are, even if it means stepping away from expectations. Finding a new community that resonates with our values can also be a huge relief. Whether it’s through online spaces or local meetups, connecting with others who’ve walked a similar path helps dilute that feeling of shame. It reinforces the idea that it’s okay to seek joy and fulfillment outside of the life we once knew. Anyone else grappling with these feelings? Sometimes just talking about it with someone who truly understands can lighten the load. What has helped you process those emotions?
