How do you cope with family events or holidays when you have chosen to be estranged?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Let’s be honest: family events and holidays can feel like a minefield when you’ve chosen to be estranged. While the world seems to be celebrating togetherness, we often find ourselves navigating feelings of loneliness, guilt, or even relief. Many of us have made the tough choice to step back for our own well-being, and that can leave a heavy weight on our hearts during those times when everyone else is gathering. One thing that has really helped me is creating my own traditions. Instead of feeling left out or pressured to rejoin family events, I’ve started to celebrate the holidays in a way that feels right for me. Whether it’s hosting a small get-together with friends who understand my situation or even treating myself to a special day of self-care, focusing on what makes me happy can be a game-changer. I've found that even simple things, like cooking my favorite meal or taking a long walk in nature, can shift my mood and help me feel connected to myself. Another approach some of us might try is reaching out to others in our community on days when family events are happening. Having even one person to text or call who understands what we’re going through can provide a sense of support and connection. I remember one holiday season when I connected with someone nearby who was also estranged from their family. We decided to have a virtual hangout, and just talking about our experiences made everything feel a little lighter. It reminded me that I'm not alone in this, and there are others who get it. Of course, it’s not always easy. There might be moments when we feel the urge to reach out to family or wish things were different. Acknowledging those feelings is important, but we should also remind ourselves why we made the choice to distance ourselves in the first place. It’s okay to grieve the relationships that weren’t healthy for us, and it’s also okay to celebrate how far we’ve come. Anyone else feeling the weight of the holidays while navigating estrangement? Sometimes just sharing our thoughts and experiences with someone who understands can change everything. What’s helped you cope during these times?
